The Basic Music Studies Program draws on the educational tradition of the University of Cauca dating back to 1968, through an academic proposal developed in response to the need for musical education among children and young people in the region and the country, whose objectives and methodologies promote the appropriate performance of musical practice. In its early stages, the program was designed within a sociocultural context different from the present one, in accordance with Agreements 006 and 007 of 1991, as well as Agreement 006 of 2011 (Restructuring of the Youth Section).
Throughout the program, various methodological strategies are implemented to foster students’ musical development through rhythm; aural development related to intensity, duration, pitch, and timbre through sequential exercises aimed at appropriate musical practice; and vocal development through solfège exercises and choral practice, in which the voice is trained and exercised for better musical and personal development. Likewise, the program offers a complementary socio-humanistic education component consisting of courses that provide flexibility in the study plan and enable students to develop physical skills, with the aim of exploring and strengthening expressiveness through rhythm and movement. Furthermore, instrumental education includes the knowledge, appropriation, and practice of techniques and styles in individual and ensemble instrumental performance.
Develop sound, body, and instrument handling skills.
Education is a fundamental social right, as well as a public service established in Article No. 67 of the 1991 Constitution. Formal and non-formal education in the contemporary world consists of an effective means of accessing and facilitating the sustainable social and human development of a people. By contributing to people’s educational process, education enables individuals to develop within a social environment. In this regard, music education is linked to the development of individuals as beings in a process of transcendence; that is, through it, the development of individuals within their cultural environment is made possible, based not only on their learning (the acquisition and creation of knowledge and skills), but also on their possibilities for sensitive and sensory growth in order to respond to the demands of their environment as social beings.
Mission
Provide children and young people with musical education and solid instrumental foundations that enable them to engage in individual and collective musical practices, with great artistic sensitivity, academic and creative interests, a strong sense of ethics, belonging, and commitment to their environment, and the ability to continue their undergraduate studies at Higher Education Institutions.
Vision
Develop and strengthen theoretical and musical educational processes in the southwestern region of the country, fostering audience development and the training of future professional musicians committed to their instrument and discipline.
