Program Overview

The Visual Arts Program aims to build an academic community centered on the production and appreciation of artistic practices. It provides professional training in the field of visual arts to explore diverse creative possibilities by integrating research, teaching, and community engagement, while fostering dialogue with the territories and cultural diversity of southwestern Colombia.

Studying Visual Arts fosters the development of complex thinking and sensitive expression through theoretical, technical, and critical tools that come together and take shape in diverse artistic practices. These practices inspire new ways of feeling and thinking through reflection on oneself and one’s surroundings.

Program General Objective

To educate professionals with the competencies required to perform in line with the current dynamics of the regional, national, and international art scene, particularly in the production of visual artworks and research-creation processes, in relation to the sociocultural context and life processes, drawing on knowledge derived from artistic practice and its connections with other disciplines, forms of knowledge, and fields of study.

Specific Objectives

  • Develop competencies to formulate and solve problems specific to the visual arts.
  • Establish connections with other disciplines in human knowledge through ongoing artistic practice, debate, and academic argumentation.
  • Develop research-creation competencies focused on local and regional contexts.
  • Foster interaction with the surrounding community through community engagement projects and practices.

Professional Profile

Graduates of the Visual Arts Program will be professionals who demonstrate the ability and social sensitivity to interpret their reality through creative processes that draw on their exploration of traditional visual languages, new media, and multimedia. They are characterized by creating artworks and reflections on individuals, communities, and their territories through creative processes that originate within themselves and develop through social exchange, as reflected in the Department of Cauca. They are aware of the region’s challenges and use art to foster community-based dialogue, critically addressing the sociocultural and political circumstances affecting southwestern Colombia.

Occupational Profile

  • Graduates of the Visual Arts Program may work as independent artists and serve as researchers, managers, coordinators, or advisors for artistic and cultural projects. They may also work for organizations that support art and culture in all their forms at the national and international levels.
