The complexity of social, cultural, political, and scientific and technological life in today’s world requires individuals to make an effort to understand, more consciously and reflectively, the environments in which they conduct their daily lives and develop their potential.

This effort calls for a critical approach to culture in its various manifestations and a desire to cultivate the mind and spirit, qualities of those who seek to prepare themselves to face both their own future and that of the society to which they belong.

Those who aspire to pursue studies in philosophy should have a vocation for exploring the value of life in its natural and cultural dimensions. For such individuals, philosophy is not only a profession but also a form of critical awareness that remains committed to improving the human condition.

Program General Objective

The Philosophy Program at the University of Cauca aims to educate professionals in philosophy who contribute to thinking critically about, reflecting on, and creatively transforming the human condition, taking into account the environment we inhabit, the time in which we live, and the cultural universe in which we shape and recreate our identity.

Specific Objectives

  • Encourage reflection on philosophical problems and their connection to the different social and cultural spatiotemporal contexts in which these problems have emerged as philosophical discourse.
  • Educate socially engaged individuals capable of engaging in dialogue with communities, governmental and nongovernmental organizations, social movements, and study or research groups.
  • Integrate and develop research within the classroom by establishing and strengthening student research groups and involving students in research groups within the Department of Philosophy or other departments at the University of Cauca.
  • Establish conditions for community engagement initiatives that connect the Philosophy Program and its students with communities across the region. This is one of the major challenges facing our program. We have adopted it as an objective toward which we must work to involve students in the research activities carried out by faculty members, contributing through reflection, inquiry, and creative input to addressing social, political, cultural, ethical, and artistic issues in Cauca.
  • Create conditions that establish a bridge between undergraduate and postgraduate programs associated with our academic unit. The aim is to broaden and enrich the program’s theoretical, research, and community engagement horizons.
