Equivalencies

Start of receipt of equivalency requests, with physical submission of documents: February 2, 2026.

To initiate the equivalency process, the student must be duly enrolled in SIMCA; otherwise, the PFI will not accept any equivalency request.
To request an equivalency for the Foreign Language Proficiency requirement, the documents in PDF format, which are listed below according to the type of equivalency requested, must be sent to the email address infopfi@unicauca.edu.co, with a copy to pfiasistenciasb@unicauca.edu.co, and subsequently submitted in physical format at the PFI office.

Important to keep in mind:
  • The email in which the Equivalency request is sent will only be taken into account when the student submits the physical documents at the PFI Coordination Office.
  • The documents:  «Equivalency Request Letter»  and «Equivalency Request Form» must be signed by hand with a black ballpoint pen and scanned in PDF format.
  • The names of the attached PDF files must be properly labeled with the student’s last name and first name, in the manner described in the different Equivalency options listed below.

The PFI reserves the right to verify the truthfulness, authenticity, and accuracy of the information provided by the student in each of the documents required for the equivalency process. These verifications will be carried out through the means established to fulfill the requirements. In particular, the PFI will verify with ICFES the authenticity of the information provided by students regarding the results obtained in the ICFES SABER PRO and ICFES SABER TyT state examinations. Likewise, it will carry out verifications with the different institutions or entities duly authorized by the Ministry of National Education that have issued the respective Course Certificates or International Test Certificates.

Types of equivalency:
1. For equivalencies with Saber Pro B1 and Saber TyT Tests

Complete results of the Saber Pro or Saber TyT test, with results for the English module at a minimum B1 level – Original PDF downloaded from the ICFES website, and the file must be attached with the following name: “SABER PRO_Last Name and First Name” (e.g., “SABER PRO_Ortega Pérez Juanita” or “SABER TyT_Ortega Pérez Juanita”).

  • Equivalency request letter: addressed to the PFI, explaining through which option you wish to request the equivalency. Download the Letter Template by clicking HERE
  • Copy of the identity document. Completed equivalency form – Download it by clicking HERE

The documents: Equivalency Request Letter + Equivalency Request Form + Copy of Identity Document, must be scanned in PDF format and combined into a single PDF file, and attached with the following name: “Equivalency Request_Last Name and First Name” (e.g., “Equivalency Request_Ortega Pérez Juanita”).
The email requesting the equivalency must be sent with the following subject line: PSI English Equivalency Request – With Saber Pro Tests (or Saber TyT, as applicable).

Recommendations:

This type of equivalency is only accepted if the results of the Saber Pro Tests were published within a period of no more than two (2) years, in accordance with Academic Agreement 021 of 2021, Article 22.

2. For equivalencies with international tests

Results of the International Proficiency Test at a minimum B1 level. The tests accepted must appear in Resolution 018035 of September 21, 2021, which includes the list of standardized examinations for the certification of language proficiency levels issued by the Ministry of National Education. The tests accepted are those for “Proficiency” or “Mastery” and some “Certification” tests. It is recommended to first consult with the PFI to verify whether the test to be submitted is valid.

The original PDF issued by the Certifying Institution must be sent, and the file must be attached with the following name: “INTERNATIONAL CERTIFICATE_Last Name and First Name” (e.g., “INTERNATIONAL CERTIFICATE_Ortega Pérez Juanita”). The documents: Equivalency Request Letter + Equivalency Request Form + Copy of Identity Document, must be scanned in PDF format and combined into a single PDF file, and attached with the following name: “Equivalency Request_Last Name and First Name” (e.g., “Equivalency Request_Ortega Pérez Juanita”).
The email requesting the equivalency must be sent with the following subject line: PSI English Equivalency Request – With International Certification.

Recommendations:

This type of equivalency is only accepted if the date on which the International Proficiency Test was taken falls within a period of no more than two (2) years, in accordance with Academic Agreement 021 of 2021, Article 22.

3. For equivalencies of PSI or foreign language courses passed in other academic programs of the University of Cauca

This document is downloaded directly from SIMCA in PDF format. – The file must be attached with the following name: “SIMCA RECORD_Last Name and First Name” (e.g., “SIMCA RECORD_Ortega Pérez Juanita”).

  • Equivalency request letter addressed to the PFI, requesting the equivalency of the passed PSI or the language courses passed in another program, indicating the student ID number for that program and specifying: the name of the program to which you wish to transfer the courses, and the current student ID number for that program.   • Copy of the identity document.
  • Completed equivalency form. Download it by clicking HERE

The documents: Equivalency Request Letter + Equivalency Request Form + Copy of Identity Document, must be scanned in PDF format and combined into a single PDF file, and attached with the following name: “Equivalency Request_Last Name and First Name” (e.g., “Equivalency Request_Ortega Pérez Juanita”).
The email requesting the equivalency must be sent with the following Subject: PSI English Equivalency Request – With PSI Passed in Another Program (or “With Courses Passed in Other Programs”), as applicable.

Recommendations:

This equivalency is only accepted if the most recent language level was completed within a period of no more than five (5) years, in accordance with Academic Agreement 021 of 2021.
If admission to or commencement of the Academic Program to which you wish to transfer the PSI took place as of Academic Period 2022-1, and the PSI was passed in the other Academic Program before Academic Period 2022-1, the equivalency request is not accepted, since the PSI taken before this period only reached A2 level, whereas programs commenced as of Academic Period 2022-1 require a B1 level.

4. For equivalencies with foreign language course certificates from other universities and Higher Education Institutions

Certificate for courses accrediting a minimum B1 level according to the CEFR, with a minimum of 360 hours of foreign language training. The original PDF issued by the Institution must be sent, and the file must be attached with the following name: “COURSE CERTIFICATE_Last Name and First Name” (e.g., “COURSE CERTIFICATE_Ortega Pérez Juanita”).

  • Equivalency request letter addressed to the PFI requesting the equivalency of the Foreign Language Proficiency PSI graduation requirement based on courses passed at another University Institution recognized by the Ministry of National Education, with a minimum of 360 hours of classes and certification of a B1 level.   • Copy of the identity document.

The documents: Equivalency Request Letter + Equivalency Request Form + Copy of Identity Document, must be scanned in PDF format and combined into a single PDF file, and attached with the following name: “Equivalency Request_Last Name and First Name” (e.g., “Equivalency Request_Ortega Pérez Juanita”).
The email requesting the equivalency must be sent with the following Subject: PSI English Equivalency Request – With Course Certificate from Other University Institutions​.

Recommendations:

This type of equivalency is only accepted if the most recent language level was completed within a period of no more than two (2) years, in accordance with Academic Agreement 021 of 2021, Article 22.
After correctly submitting the physical documents, the PFI takes between 3 and 5 days to request the equivalency from DARCA, and DARCA has between 5 and 10 business days to upload the equivalency result.

Remember that before submitting an equivalency request, it is very important to have an advising session with the advisor at the PFI Coordination Office.
